[jdom-interest] JDOM/xerces Encoding Questions

I have a couple of applications that use JDOM with the xerces parsers.
Allthough it is understood that the limited user interface of these
application is not internationalized, there was some (perhaps misguided)
hope that since it was Java unicode based that it would handle other than
UTF-8 encoding such as Big5.
I have some basic questions about unicode , xml and JDOM:
1. Does JDOM and xerces handle encoding="Big5"?
2. If someone takes the XML files that now flow happily through my
applications and changes UTF-8 to Big5 will there be problems that require
application changes?
3. If my applications do literal compares to elements such as tag names,
xml syntax, etc. in the xml, will they still work?
thanks for any ideas,
Fred Clewis
