I think you pegged it, Per.  We'll have to change the mechanism for 
obtaining the preserveFormat instance in XMLOutputter to bring over the 
pertinent attributes of the userFormat:

* expandEmptyElement
* ignoreTrAXEscapingPIs
* escapeStrategy
