This has been discussed a number of times and you won't be the first
person to make an attempt at generifying JDom.

Subject: [jdom-interest] java1.5 version?

Hi

Is there any interest in doing a java-generics release of JDOM?

I took a bash at doing it and concluded that pushing generics throughout
the codebase was probably too much work, but that it shouldn't be too
hard to simply generify the client-facing code.

Obviously, this is going to mean that there will be 2 branches of JDOM,
but the existing codebase is currently pretty stable, so that shouldn't
be too much of a problem.

I'm willing to do the work, but is the maintainer interested in
accepting patches for this?

Regards, Noel Grandin.
