doctype a system type? inline? If system, is the path
relative? HTTP? if HTTP, could you have a network, DNS, proxy type
problem? I would simplify with first an inline dtd, then a system with a

It doesn't hang if I take out the DOCTYPE statement. If I leave it in,
it will hang with or without validation.
