It's not as good as just

Sort

Mainly because you have to know to do this special trick. But it's not
worth making a major change like auto-detach at this late stage for it.

So does the new removeContent() solve the sorting problem
sufficiently?

Remove, sort, reattach.

Then we don't have to change things to auto-detach.
